Rev. Dr. Johnny L. Miller

Reverend Dr. Johnny L. Miller

Reverend Dr. Johnny L. Miller serves as Senior Pastor of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church (MVBC), where he has led the congregation for more than 49 years. Born in Tutwiler, Mississippi, he moved to Chicago, graduated from Marshall High School and served in the U.S. military before being appointed Pastor of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in 1976. From organizing peace marches alongside community members and then-Mayor Richard Daley, to leading youth educational tours, and providing residents with food and clothing during times of need, Rev. Miller has consistently demonstrated his deep care and commitment to everyone in the 28th Ward.

Rev. Miller’s community interests include working closely with elected officials (including retired Alderman Ed Smith), clergy, and community leaders to cultivate and uplift the youth of the 28th Ward. Among these efforts were trips that exposed young people to life beyond Chicago, including visits to Disney World, Niagara Falls, and the Wisconsin Dells. Rev. Miller also has a passion for Southern cooking. When he is not in the pulpit, there is a good chance he can be found in the church kitchen preparing meals for his congregation and visitors.

Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, along with the JLM Center, has provided guidance, resources, and support to the 28th Ward throughout Rev. Miller’s pastoral leadership. He has taken great pride in witnessing new housing opportunities for seniors, increased resources for youth, and a strengthened sense of community unity. Throughout his tenure, Rev. Miller has remained a devoted servant to those in need, offering both spiritual and emotional support.

After 49 years of faithful leadership, Rev. Miller has announced that 2026 will be his final year as Senior Pastor. He will pass the mantle of leadership to his son, Rev. John Miller II. Looking ahead to the next chapter of his life, Rev. Miller plans to enjoy the fruits of his labor by serving as a mentor and trusted resource to the many preachers and faith leaders he has guided over the years.
