This month’s Unsung Hero is Ms.Tiffany Tillman , Principal of Melody S.T.E.M. Elementary, located in the West Garfield Park community.

Tiffany Tillman is a third-generation Chicago Public Schools employee and has been with CPS for 33 years. She has worked in various capacities and with various schools to continue to empower our students, including as a recruiter to ensure elementary students chose the best high school to
continue their education. She is going into her 13th year as Principal of Melody S.T.E.M.

Principal Tillman has created several interactive activities that bring excitement to education, such as the “Melody Mastery Bowl”. It is a platform that allows classrooms to compete against each other academically to strive towards good grades and high test scores. This format also allows teachers and faculty to participate to help create an environment where everyone is involved in educating our students. From navigating educating students during COVID to dealing with the emotions her students display on a daily basis, efforts like these help maximize her students’ potential.

Principal Tillman believes that attending school should consist of more than just learning and taking tests. She has created a learning environment for students to maximize the lessons in school that can be applied to their everyday life. Recently, she reconnected with a student she taught years ago and learned that the same student enrolled their child into Melody S.T.E.M. Several of Principal Tillman’s former students are now serving as teachers and administrators throughout Chicago. It is experiences like these that continue to fuel Principal Tillman’s commitment to our inner city youth.

In addition to serving as a Principal, Ms. Tillman serves as the Secretary of the Garfield Park Rite to Wellness Collective Board of Directors. She is active with several educational institutions and organizations including Malcolm X West Campus, Legler Library, Chicago Police Department and BUILD Inc. All are west side based organizations that reaffirm her dedication to the uplifting of our community.
