Boilermakers Field Construction/Repair Apprenticeship

Basic Qualifications

Applicants shall meet the following minimum qualifications:

  1. Age — All applicants shall be at least 18 years of age. Applicants are required to submit reliable proof of age. (Please make copy of birth certificate so committee can file it with your application.)
  2. Education — Applicants shall be high school graduates or provide proof of equivalent education attainment, such as successful completion of GED. Each applicant shall submit a copy of their high school transcript or official report of GED test results if these documents will verify graduation. (Please make copy of high school diploma/GED so committee can file it with your application.)

Applicants to enter this program will be selected first on the basis of welding qualifications, and then on the basis of random selection, as set forth in the approved standards and selection procedures of the National Joint Apprenticeship Committee for the trade. HEAT AND FROST INSULATORS


Local 17 offers an excellent five-year apprenticeship program that is second to none. Each year, about 185 apprentices participate in the program. Below is an overview of the program. Please contact us at 708-468-8000 for more information on how to get started.

Length of Apprenticeship:

Five (5) years—Minimum of 720 hours of classroom instruction.
  • Apprentices receive 144 hours of classroom instruction per year.
  • Apprentices receive a minimum of 1,600 hours of on-the-job training per year.

Wage Information:

  • 1st year 50% of journeyman wages
  • 2nd year 60% of journeyman wages
  • 3rd year 70% of journeyman wages
  • 4th year 80% of journeyman wages
  • 5th year 90% of journeyman wages
  • Journeyman Level 100% of journeyman wages

Benefits: Health Insurance, Pension, Annuity.

Basic Requirements:
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a G.E.D. Certificate.
  • Must be physically fit to work in the construction industry.
  • Must pass a drug test.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or in the process of naturalization.
  • Must pass an aptitude test.
  • Must pass a personal interview.

Working Conditions:
  • Heat and Frost Insulators work in all types of weather elements with the majority of the work being performed outdoors.
Recommended Preparatory Classes:
  • Algebra, geometry and mechanical drawing classes

Required Abilities:
  • Must work well with others.
  • Must be able to understand and follow instructions.
  • Must be able to lift heavy objects.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces.
  • Must be able to work at high levels on ladders and scaffolds.

Work Experience: (Helpful, but not necessary for acceptance.)
  • Hazardous waste handling experience is helpful.
Entry Process:
  • Obtain and complete an application. The application process 
will take place over two-weeks. Applicants will be required 
to come to the apprentice school to pick up an application package to be completed and returned within the two-week period. We have not yet set the date for the next selection process. The date will be advertised in local papers.
  • Submit copies of high school diploma and grades, and/or G.E.D. Certificate.
  • Pass a physical exam.
  • Submit references.
  • Take and pass a general aptitude test.
  • Take and pass a personal interview.
  • Pass a drug-screening test.

GLAZIERS (WINDOWS)

Requirements for taking the Apprenticeship Aptitude Test:
  • Birth Certificate
  • Social Security Card
  • High School Diploma / GED
  • Drivers License
  • Non refundable Test Fee

  • For test preparation you will need to study basic math skills
  • No calculators or cell phones permitted
  • You will be notified via mail of a pass or fail.
  • If you pass, You will have to find a sponsor (company to hire you for your 3 year apprenticeship). That company gives a "Letter of Intent to Hire", which holds your spot for the next available class opening.
  • You must pass a drug screening.
  • Initiation fee for apprentices at this time is $475.00
  • You must have reliable transportation.


ROOFERS & WATERPROOFERS

The Chicagoland Roofer's Joint Apprenticeship and Training Program will be accepting applications as of April 1st 2011.

Requirements for the Roofers' Apprenticeship Training Program:
  • Must apply in person at our office, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m..
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must pay a $20.00 non refundable application fee in the form of cash or money order.
  • Must show us an original high-school diploma or G.E.D. certificate (proof of 6 month’s commercial roofing experience may take place of diploma).
  • Must be able to speak and understand the English language. (Classes are in English.)
  • Must show the following two forms of identification (a valid driver’s license and social security card are required).
  • Applicant must take a general aptitude test.

Applicants will be notified by mail of his/her scheduled testing date.
Once you have successfully completed the placement test:
  • After you successfully complete the placement test, you will be ranked according to your test score. You will be contacted for a position based on the test, and when a position becomes available. After you are contacted you must complete the following steps:
  • You must take the physical and drug screen within 24 hours of our call.
  • You must pass a screen for illegal drugs and a physical examination which meets Department of Transportation requirements and to establish you are physically fit to perform the work of our Trade. Some of the materials that must be picked up weigh up to 100 pounds.
  • You must pay an initiation fee of $440.00 to Local #11. (this fee is non-refundable)
  • Monthly Union dues are required, payable to The United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers Local #11.
  • You must provide your own transportation to job sites.
