Alderman Jason Ervin

Fourteen years ago when I was 22 years old and looking to help people in my neighborhood, I
asked my father Claudell Ervin for advice. My father was the 11th District Police Commander and recommended Alderman Ed Smith as an honest and caring elected official. I joined Alderman Smith’s organization and have proudly worked with him ever since. I am excited about continuing the Alderman’s efforts to bring a renewed sense of pride and activity to the 28th Ward. As a young African American, I will bridge the gap between generations. I want to empower and energize all of our residents so hope and opportunities replace frustration and loss of faith in government. I believe we can improve our schools, protect our residents, provide economic opportunities, and maximize public services to all of our neighborhoods.

My unique volunteer and work experiences on the Westside of Chicago and the Village of Maywood have prepared me for this awesome experience and includes some of the following:
  • Local School Council service at Tilton Elementary School and Westinghouse Career Academy
  • President of the Young Democrats
  • Cook County Young Democrats, Executive Board Member
  • National Young Democrats of America, Executive Committee Member
  • City Manager and Director of Finance for the Village of Maywood

Professionally, I am a Certified Public Accountant and former Village Manager for Maywood, Illinois a bustling community of over 27,000 residents. As City Manager, I managed a budget of over $40 million and oversaw the Departments of Police, Fire, Economic Development, Finance, and Streets & Sanitation. More importantly, I reported directly to Mayor Henderson Yarbrough, Sr. and the Village of Maywood Board of Trustees.

I am a graduate of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (SIUC) where I received my undergraduate degree in Accounting and a graduate degree from Governors State University in Public Administration. While at SIUC, I worked to build coalitions among students and faculty and was ultimately elected to the SIU Board of Trustees as a Student Representative in my senior year. Also while at SIUC, I had the opportunity to confer with and introduce to the campus the 42ndPresident of the United States, William Jefferson Clinton.
